Lopez and Fonda have stayed in touch since their comedy show 21 years ago — and Fonda starred in Lopez’s 2024 film It’s me… now: a love storywhere she played a member of the film’s “zodiac council”.
In the accompanying documentary The greatest love story ever toldFonda had a revealing conversation with Lopez about her marriage to Ben Affleck, which dissolved in 2024. Before that happened, however, Fonda told Lopez that she had a “concern” about their marriage, telling the Maid in Manhattan star, “I want you to know that I don’t really know why, but I feel invested in you and Ben, and I really want this to work. However, that’s what concerns me. It’s like you’re trying too hard to prove something instead of just living it. You know, every other photo is the two of you kissing and hugging.”
“It’s just us living our lives,” Lopez responded (per Today).

With a nod to the 2023 Grammys, where Affleck looked unhappy, Fonda added: “I got really scared, you know, with all this bullshit about the Grammys and he looks unhappy and I’m like, ‘Oh my God, what’s going on?’ early 2025 after a little over two years of marriage.
Lopez and Fonda became friends on the set of Monster-in-lawwhich represented a career comeback for Fonda, who retired from acting in 1991 and only returned in front of the camera for the role of Viola Fields. In one scene, Lopez’s character, Charlotte “Charlie” Cantilini, slapped Viola, with Lopez later calling it “one of the funniest scenes” she’s ever done.

“I was so afraid I was going to punch Jane Fonda in the face or hurt her in any way,” Lopez said in a May 2019 video she shared on YouTube. “And really, her character was a lot like her, and my character at the time was a lot like me. I was so afraid of her.”
“I don’t even think we were supposed to slap each other,” she continued. “I just remember afterwards Jane had a blood blister at the top of her eye. My nail went up into her eye.” The “On the Floor” singer added that she was “mortified” that her slap hurt Fonda, crediting her for being a “gangster bitch” and taking the injury in stride. “I just love him,” Lopez said.
During a March 2023 appearance on The Drew Barrymore ShowFonda explained the scene by telling Barrymore: “Well Jennifer, according to Jennifer, she had this huge diamond ring, and so when she slapped me one time, she opened my eye, my eyebrow.” Fonda added airily, “And she never apologized.”

Fonda has spoken over the years about her role in Monster-in-law meant to her after taking a 15-year break from acting. Speaking on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert In 2015, Fonda called her role in the romantic comedy “the only smart thing I’ve ever done career-wise” (per Page six).
“The biggest luck was getting the role in Monster-in-law at a point in my career where I had been out of acting for 15 years or more,” Fonda said (per The mirror). “It was with Jennifer Lopez, and it was a big comeback for me.” Noting that she was almost 65 when she “came out with this script out of the blue,” she added: “I thought, ‘People are going to come to the movie to see J.Lo, but they’re going to rediscover Fonda’ – and that’s what happened.”
Monster-in-law was a success, ultimately grossing $155 million at the worldwide box office, Deadline reported. After filming wrapped, Fonda gave Lopez a diamond watch, E! News reported. Fonda said she “learned a lot” from Lopez, while asserting that “it doesn’t get any better than this.” Lopez, for her part, said Fonda is “such a powerful presence and so in the moment. It’s everything you dream of when you become an actress and you think you’re working with the greats.” Fonda even hinted at one point that she wanted to “do a sequel” (although, sadly, that never came to fruition).

In 2013, it was Fonda who introduced Lopez when she received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. “Most of these stars that are on the Hollywood Walk of Fame are for a person who only has one talent,” Fonda said. “To be honest, she should have a whole block of stars.”
“We became friends Monster-in-lawa movie in which I had to hate Jennifer,” Fonda continued. “It was the hardest acting job I’ve ever had.” She added, “During filming, we got to trade insults. I got to put her face in a wedding cake, it was fun. We shared some serious laughs: She cut my eyebrow with her diamond ring. She also taught me to love diamonds, remember that?

“It seemed like the more we tortured each other on screen, the more friends we became,” Fonda said.
The two were last seen together in 2025, on the 20th anniversary of their film, at the CAA pre-Oscar party, where they posed for a cute photo together.
