Key Points

  • Jodie Sweetin has opened up about some of the financial struggles she faced after Full house.

  • The actress played Stephanie Tanner on the sitcom for eight seasons, from 1987 to 1995.

  • Since then, Sweetin said she has “learned to exist” with and without a lot of money.

Full house Star Jodie Sweetin reflects on her time between jobs in Hollywood.

The actress was still a teenager when her beloved sitcom TGIF ended its eight-season run in 1995. Over the next few years, she landed only a handful of acting jobs, all while battling drug and alcohol addiction. After getting sober in 2011, she took a job as a logistics coordinator at a treatment center in Los Angeles.

“I had no ego about it,” Sweetin said Wednesday on the We’re still here, baby podcast. “I didn’t care that I was working, quote, normal job. I think other people were still like, ‘What are you doing here?’ And I was like, “Pay my bills.” The children do not pay for themselves.

Sweetin has two teenage daughters: Zoie, 18, with her second husband Cody Herpin, and Beatrix, 16, with her third husband Morty Coyle. The actress married her fourth husband, Mescal Wasilewski, in 2022.

“And it’s not like I’ve always been a materialistic person,” Sweetin continued, “but you learn humility when you’re at Target and you have to turn around and, you know, hand over some money, because you don’t have money on your debit card.”

The Hallmark star said she “learned to be truly happy and I love my life.”

She continued, “I was like, I’d be okay doing this if that’s what I want to do, cool. And I went for it to be as fully present as possible and that old kind of vibe, you know, ‘blooms where you’re planted’. Like, if that’s what it is, then I’m going to make it good, and I’m going to have fun, and I’m going to enjoy it.”

The other option, she said, was to “be unhappy” and constantly think she was supposed to be doing something else. Additionally, being without money and having a lot of it each brings its own problems.

“I’ve had some and I definitely haven’t had some,” Sweetin said, “and I’ve learned to exist in both.”

Sweetin’s acting career – and her portfolio – received a big boost when Full house revival series Fuller house debuted on Netflix in 2016. The series focused on her character, Stephanie Tanner, as well as those of Candace Cameron Bure (DJ Tanner) and Andrea Barber (Kimmy Gibbler) raising their own children together.

When they were pitching the show, it “straddled that line” between economic worlds, Sweetin admitted.

The situation became so dire: “I had to borrow money the first week I was working on Fuller house“, she said, “and I skidded out of my first paycheck with about $190 in my bank account.”

The sequel series ended in 2020 after five seasons on Netflix.
