Joe Milton Reportedly Signed By Eagles From Cowboys Practice Squad After Jalen Hurts Calf Injury

With Jalen Hurts set to miss at least one game after being diagnosed with a superficial blood clot, the Philadelphia Eagles are adding more depth to their quarterback room.

According to NFL insider Jordan Schultz, the Eagles are signing Joe Milton to their 53-man roster after he spent the first five weeks of the season on the Dallas Cowboys’ practice squad.

The Eagles’ statement regarding Hurts’ blood clot revealed that it was discovered via ultrasound after their visit Saturday prior to their game against the Jacksonville Jaguars in London.

On Wednesday, a follow-up ultrasound “revealed movement in the small blood clot.” Hurts was ruled out for Week 6 against the Carolina Panthers while they “determine appropriate treatment.”.“

Tanner McKee is set to make his third career start on Sunday. Andy Dalton, who began this season as Philadelphia’s No. 2 quarterback, was released by the club on October 9.

Behind Hurts and McKee, the only other quarterback on the Eagles roster before adding Milton was Cole Payton.

Payton was a fifth-round pick by Philadelphia in the 2026 draft out of North Dakota State. He went 5 of 12 for 47 yards and a touchdown in three preseason games.

Milton is in his third season in the NFL after being a sixth-round pick in the 2024 draft by the New England Patriots. He played in one game as a rookie before being traded to Dallas in April 2025.

The Cowboys used Milton in four games last season. He went 15 of 24 for 183 yards with one touchdown and two interceptions in 2025.

Given the timing of Milton’s signing, Payton would likely appear to be Philadelphia’s No. 2 quarterback against the Panthers.

Depending on how long Hurts is out, the Eagles could elevate Milton to their primary backup at some point as he becomes acclimated to the playbook.

The Eagles have lost three straight games after a 2-0 start. They are below .500 for the first time since the 2021 season.
