On Tuesday, the Giants released wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr. On Wednesday, Giants coach Jack Harbaugh addressed the decision to pull the plug on OBJ 2.0.
“I had, you know, a great conversation with Odell and, you know, it’s tough,” Harbaugh told reporters. “But we just didn’t have enough, you know? It just didn’t work for us. And like I told him, I wanted to be able to get more. I wanted him to be able to do more. I wanted to put him on the field more. For some reason we couldn’t do it. Put it on us. We failed to achieve it. But at that point, that’s kind of where we were. And we had to move on. »
Harbaugh recalled comments last week about the possibility of Beckham getting more opportunities offensively.
“Well, I think I said I hoped he would get more opportunities,” Harbaugh said, “That’s what I said. So nothing changed. I was hoping he would get more opportunities. And he didn’t. You know, and that’s where we were. So I felt like, given the case, we’re not going to be able to achieve that. Roster-wise, we need more from this place, and that’s what we’re going to do. Nothing about Odell. Nothing he can do, in that sense. It’s just that we haven’t been able to make it, make it work, whatever you want to call it, and I was hoping we would get there, and we didn’t.
(And yes, Harbaugh said he hoped This would happen on Sunday.)
The problem is that Beckham was too deep on the depth chart to not play on special teams. They needed someone who, even if he only got limited snaps on offense, could do more in the third phase – as Braxton Berrios and Charlie Jones will do.
Injuries made it necessary to tweak the roster to make sure the guys on the back end could contribute, one way or another. In three games, OBJ had fallen into oblivion.
And he’s unlikely to come back. His number, 13, has already been reassigned to quarterback Jake Haener, whose previous number (18) had been claimed by new backup quarterback JJ McCarthy.
