Lionsgate announced Thursday that it has given the green light to its animated film John Wick, with Keanu Reeves signing a deal to reprise his iconic role as the iconic assassin in the billion-dollar franchise.
The feature film will be produced by the John Wick production team of Thunder Road’s Basil Iwanyk and Erica Lee, 87Eleven Entertainment’s Chad Stahelski and Keanu Reeves, and will be joined by Point Grey. Nathan Kahane is executive producer.
Shannon Tindle (Ultraman: on the rise, Kubo and the two strings) will lead. The project is written by Ryan & Kaz Firpo.
As previously announced, the film will travel back in time to tell the story of John Wick before the first film, as he completes the impossible task in order to free himself from his obligation to the High Table and earn the right to be with the love of his life, Helen.
Lionsgate CEO Jon Feltheimer noted in comments today after the quarterly results that the film is in pre-production.
This has been in the works for a while. Adam Fogelson, president of Lionsgate Motion Picture Group, announced the animated action film at CinemaCom2025. “In animation, as in the world of John Wick, the possibilities are endless,” Fogelson said at the time. “There’s no John Wick story that fans have been clamoring for more than The Impossible Task. Shannon’s vision on this story is incredible, and we’re beyond excited to see what John Wick can do in animation,” he said at the time.
