The next main line Star Wars the film has a director in Jon Watts.
According to the Hollywood Reporter (based on early reporting from Knight Edge Media), Watts will direct the first installment of what would be a trilogy written by Simon Kinberg. This film series is planned to take place afterThe Rise of Skywalker and continue the Skywalker saga. THR further claimed that Daisy Ridley’s Rey will feature in this new sequel series in some capacity, although it is currently unclear how.
As of this writing, this first film has not yet received the green light from Disney. But of the many films in the franchise that have been announced (or implied to be in development), this one would be the “furthest along.” Regardless, the film brings Watts and Kinberg back into the fold: the former co-created and directed the short-lived The skeleton crew, while Kinberg wrote and co-created Star Wars Rebels.
Outside of this franchise, both men are Marvel veterans, with Kinberg having written or produced several X-Men films and Watts directing the Home Spider-Man film trilogy. (And almost lead the most recent Fantastic Four movie.)
Disney struggles to create Star Wars films for years now, so the jury is out on whether Watts and Kinberg’s film will see the light of day. We will know more about the situation as it develops. Until then, the franchise returns to theaters with Star Wars: Starfighter on May 28, 2027.
