Joni Mitchell officially became an American citizen at age 82, more than six decades after she first moved to the United States.

The music icon, originally from Canada, announced the news on Instagram, sharing a photo of herself beaming while holding an American flag as well as a video of her naturalization ceremony.

“A journey that began 62 years ago,” Mitchell captioned his post.

Mitchell wore a red and navy floral cardigan featuring an American flag pin, a red beaded necklace, a red beret and black pants with black boots, while posing between an American flag and a Department of Homeland Security flag.

In the video Mitchell uploaded, she was seated in the front row at the ceremony when the speaker announced, “And Joni Mitchell, Canada” to cheers and applause from the audience.

According to KSL, Mitchell will also retain his Canadian citizenship because the United States and Canada legally allow dual citizenship.

The legendary singer-songwriter was born Roberta Joan Anderson in Fort Macleod, Alberta, to Flight Lieutenant William Andrew Anderson of the Royal Canadian Air Force and teacher Myrtle Marguerite.

Mitchell’s family lived on several bases during World War II before settling in Saskatoon, which the singer often referred to as her hometown. She then attended the Alberta College of Art in Calgary before dropping out and moving to Toronto, where she gigged in coffeehouses and folk clubs.

The “Both Sides Now” singer moved to the United States in 1965, at the age of 21, after marrying American folk singer Chuck Mitchell. The former couple, who lived in Detroit, Michigan, performed together as a folk duo before divorcing in 1967.

After their divorce, Mitchell left Detroit and moved to New York, where she became an integral part of the Greenwich Village folk scene and performed up and down the East Coast.

In 1968, Mitchell moved to Los Angeles and settled in Laurel Canyon, which was becoming a hub for singer-songwriters including David Crosby, Graham Nash and others. In the mid-1970s, Mitchell moved to the Bel Air neighborhood of Los Angeles, where she lived for decades in a historic 1920s home.

Mitchell built her legendary music career while living in California, where she recorded many of her most acclaimed albums, including “Blue,” “Court and Spark” and “Ladies of the Canyon.”

Mitchell has won 11 Grammy Awards and was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame and the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 1997.

She also received the Kennedy Center Honors in 2021 and received the prestigious Library of Congress Gershwin Prize for Popular Song in 2023.

Mitchell is an outspoken critic of President Donald Trump and has expressed frustration over not being able to vote in the U.S. election because she was Canadian.

During a performance at the Hollywood Bowl in Los Angeles in October 2024, Mitchell criticized Trump while performing his 1985 song “Dog Eat Dog,” according to Billboard.

After singing lyrics about rich financiers, she added: “Like Donald Trump!“

After performing the song, Mitchell responded to an audience member who shouted an anti-Trump remark.

“‘F— Donald Trump.’ I love this song,” she said, apparently referencing rapper YG’s 2016 protest song, “FDT (F— Donald Trump),” featuring the late rapper and activist Nipsey Hussle.

She then encouraged Americans to participate in the 2024 US presidential election, in which Trump ran against Democratic former Vice President Kamala Harris.

“Everybody go out and vote. It’s an important issue. I wish I could vote. I’m Canadian. I’m one of those bad immigrants,” Mitchell said.

Months before becoming a U.S. citizen, Mitchell criticized the political climate in the United States by accepting a lifetime achievement award at Canada’s Juno Awards in March.

After Mitchell’s comments at the Juno Awards, the White House issued a dismissive response.
