Josh Brolin says he became a full-time stock trader after Hollywood stopped calling him
Josh Brolin said he wasn’t taken seriously as an actor until the Oscar-winning film “No Country for Old Men” in 2007 – and in the years before the film was made, he had a short career as a full-time stock trader.
The 58-year-old son of actor James Brolin told Theo Von on his “This Past Weekend” podcast that despite the early success of “The Goonies,” his Hollywood career was going nowhere.
Before playing Brand on “The Goonies,” he said he went to “350 auditions” and people told him, “This isn’t for you.”
He said the ’80s classic was his first time in front of a camera, admitting: “I ruined the first day of filming because I couldn’t stop laughing” because he was so nervous.
Shortly after making “The Goonies,” he went to New York to study acting and do theater. He said he “took it seriously” and that he “spent 22 years taking it seriously because no one was interested until I really did ‘No Country,’ and then ‘No Country’ kind of changed s…”.
During that time, Brolin said he worked as a landscaper for a year, then became a stock trader at age 30, “for almost five years full time.”
“I was really good at it,” he admitted, explaining that he worked from home on three screens, “four tabs per screen.”
He said he does both swing trading and day trading.
“I definitely made more money in those four years… than I did in 20 years as a comedian. But I didn’t really make anything from acting.”
“I loved day trading, man,” he added.
Even after gaining critical acclaim in the industry, the money didn’t blow him away.
For “No Country for Old Men,” he said he received $100,000, “so I came up with what, $30,000? That’s not considered a good year.”
But his career in Hollywood began to change quickly after that.
While filming “No Country for Old Men,” Brolin said he sent in an audition tape for “American Gangster” with his 16-year-old son playing Denzel Washington.
“And that’s the last audition I ever did,” he said.
Brolin now stars in the thriller “Whalefall,” about a diver swallowed by a whale. Brolin plays the main character’s estranged father.
