Kathy Griffin Rips Shane Gillis After ‘SNL’ Monologue
Kathy Griffin doesn’t hold back when it comes to Shane Gillis.
The outspoken comedian called the controversial “Saturday Night Live” host a “hack” and took aim at a series of male comics who she said “all look like they can’t get laid.”
However, Griffin, 65, defended Gillis’ right to make offensive jokes after sparking backlash for saying women “dress like whores” in gyms during his “SNL” monologue this weekend.
“I think as a comic, I’m always going to fight for the First Amendment and their right to say it and yet I don’t have to like it,” she told Page Six in an exclusive interview Tuesday.
“So I’m defending his right to say it, and I’m also defending everyone else’s right to think less of him.”
“There are a lot of hacks that work really well, and they come from TikTok or the podcast world,” the Emmy winner explained, quoting Joe Rogan.
“He’s not the only one who escaped Joe Rogan’s influence,” she continued.
“There’s so many of them; they all look like me. They all look like they can’t get laid; they all look the same to me; they all tell the same jokes… and they tell these jokes about women from 100 years ago, like women should be in the kitchen and shut up and all that kind of stuff.”
A representative for Gillis did not immediately respond to Page Six’s request for comment.
During his opening monologue Saturday, Gillis took aim at the shorts of women who go to the gym — particularly “those neon-colored…artificial-bait shorts” with “wrinkles (that) go around the cheeks and all combine at the butthole.”
The actor, who dropped an uncensored F-bomb later in the series, continued: “You’re not allowed to watch. For real, don’t watch, because they’re filming. I’m in the background of like 10 TikToks right now.”
Gillis was cast on “SNL” in 2019 — but was fired in less than a week due to backlash over resurfaced podcast clips that showed him using racist and homophobic slurs.
Several celebrities, including “SNL” alums Ego Nwodim and Dan Levy, have criticized Gillis.
“Women wearing short shorts to the gym doesn’t make them whores. It makes men call them whores like misogynists. There’s a difference there,” the “Schitt’s Creek” star said in an Instagram post.
The “My Life on the D-List” alum stressed that she doesn’t consider herself woke, “which is probably what these guys are saying to anyone who objects to this joke.”
“I think it’s important for comedians to evolve and change over time,” she explained, “and if that means removing certain words that you were using…”
The Grammy winner admitted, “I used a lot of words that horrify me (now), but I don’t use them anymore. I want to think I’m still learning.”
Griffin is currently on tour and will appear at City Hall on Friday.
