Kennedy tries to secure one more victory for MAHA before the midterms
Secretary of Health Robert F. Kennedy Jr.. is once again trying to define ultra-processed foods, a longtime target of its Make America Healthy Again movement.
The effort, led by the Department of Health and Human Services and involving top White House officials, comes less than two weeks before a midterm election in which MAHA voter turnout could prove crucial for the GOP — and after months of complaints that the administration has failed to deliver on its promises.
Conversations among officials have resumed in recent weeks after negotiations stalled this summer, said three administration officials who were granted anonymity to describe internal discussions.
Defining ultra-processed foods, a step the government has not taken before, could shift Americans’ diets toward foods that Kennedy and his allies blame for the nation’s chronic disease epidemic. Kennedy and many MAHA advocates have called for ultra-processed foods to carry warning labels that they say would help Americans avoid harmful foods.
