Key Husker defender out Saturday, Oregon provides clarity on QB picture
Both Nebraska And Oregon brought some clarity to their lineups ahead of Saturday night’s game in Eugene.
Safety in Nebraska Jamir Connwhich left Saturday’s defeat to Indianais officially out for Saturday’s game against the Ducks.
Speaking hypothetically on Tuesday, Nebraska defensive coordinator Rob Aurich said Nebraska might choose not to just replace Conn with another safety.
“As we figure out what Jamir’s availability is going to be, if he’s not available, it’s going to be a very, very good test for everyone else in this room and who steps up and how we find the best combination of the best 11 players on the field,” Aurich said Tuesday. “It’s not always necessary to replace them with a safety or a corner,” Aurich added. “Who are the 11 best?”
Caleb Benningwho replaced Conn against Indiana, said Conn was a key part on and off the field.
“Jamir Conn means a lot to us, he’s the leader in the DB room. He’s our voice,” Benning said. “So just knowing that he puts his all into it every day… every moment… and I really mean that. He’s there late, he’s there early. So, knowing how much he means to us and how much we have to support him and play through him on the field.”
In addition to Conn, Nebraska also listed defensive tackle Riley Van Poppel as questionable for Saturday’s game. Van Poppel missed the Indiana game with a back/disc injury that occurred before the Hoosiers game.
On the Oregon side, there was some clarity on the Ducks quarterback question. Quarterback on Oregon roster Dante Moore as for Saturday’s match. He hasn’t played since suffering a concussion in a win against USC.
It’s also worth noting that on the Oregon side, senior receiver Evan Stewart was listed as questionable for Saturday’s game.
This means that Oregon will either turn to Dylan Raiola or third-string quarterback Thomas Thomas. Both quarterbacks played in Saturday’s loss to UCLA and Oregon’s head coach said earlier this week that Raiola and Thomas would compete all week for the starting job.
