DC police have arrested three 14-year-old boys and a 13-year-old boy for what they believe was a month-long spree of home invasion burglaries in Northeast DC.

Investigators say they have linked the teens to at least eight burglaries. In many cases, the teenagers were armed. In one case, police say a 14-year-old assaulted a victim with the intent to commit sexual abuse.

Police said the teens were looking for cash, phones and cars. In four cases, the teens stole cars, all of which were recovered in the Southeast.

A D Street NE victim said she was in her basement bathroom when she heard footsteps upstairs.

“I came out of the bathroom and there was a kid with a gun standing there, he told me not to move, then said, ‘Go back to the bathroom.’ And then they were in the house for, I don’t know, maybe 15, 20 minutes tops,” she said. “They were looking for, I think, my car key and my money, but didn’t take my computer or anything, so they found my car key, stole my car and left.”

“They had broken in through my cat flap,” she added. “A little cat flap.”

At one point, the victim said one of the teens opened the bathroom door and asked her to unlock her phone.

A few days later, the teens returned and attempted to rob her house again, pointing a gun at her boyfriend’s face. They stole her car keys, but not the car, she said. They also damaged her doorbell camera and took $40 in cash.

D.C. police have arrested several youths they suspect of being responsible for two armed home invasions in the Northeast in recent weeks. News4’s Megan McGrath reports what police say is a series of crimes committed by people under the age of 18. More information is expected to be released soon.

Acting Police Chief Jeffery Carroll told reporters that the four teens did not participate in each burglary; they sometimes worked in groups of two or three. They entered from the backs of houses and were often armed with firearms.

“It appears their behavior has escalated,” he said.

Police released photos on Saturday of young people who were suspects at the time. News4 blurred their faces because they were charged as juveniles.

The suspects were presented to juvenile court late Tuesday afternoon.
