‘Lanterns’ Season 2 Will Stay ‘Grounded’ on Earth, Says Showrunner
Season 2 of “Lanterns” does not change its earthly orientation, according to its showrunner, perhaps paralyzing its cosmic heroes too much.

We knew since its creation that Lanterns was supposed to be a concrete version of the usually space-related superhero group, attempting to create a spectacle in the vein of True Detective. Well, that’s what he did, and some fans liked it, some didn’t. And those who didn’t want to might want to buckle down for season 2, which the showrunner says will be similar.
As always, we talk about Lanterns season 2 appears to have already been greenlit, which it hasn’t, but everyone involved is taking it for granted and the writers room has been running for a while already. Here, Lanterns Showrunner Chris Mundy talks about the plan for season 2 and how it doesn’t change its mood and location:
“It’s like we threw out a lot of different things,” Mundy said on The Ringer-verse podcast. “I mean, again, we want to deal with everything – you know, we probably won’t come back to Rushville unless something crazy happens in Rushville, you know, every 10 years. But you’ll – it’ll be an Earth-based story that we’ll most likely continue.”
“We showed that you can leave the planet, so that’s nice, right? But because of that, we want whoever is here to be as grounded and real as possible. Our idea was just to ground everything and then layer on the other layers. But it’s just like, okay, are you with us? Great. Now we can expand. And it’s the same thing with introducing all the other Lanterns and all that.”
So while the series will feature more Lanterns than just John, Guy, and Hal, it seems (all indications point to Hal’s return in some form), the door is open for others, which could include Kyle Raynor and Jessica Cruz perhaps. Hopefully Mogo, the planet. Or that of the squirrel.
However, yes. connected to earth and earthed. It’s not like that doesn’t ran for most of the season, and he walked on two other planets at one point, briefly, but at some point many fans are hoping for the kind of blockbuster Green Lantern building action we got a taste of with Guy in Superman. We just got a bunch of different shield types and a tornado in Lanterns, mostly.
I understand not wanting to abandon the genre entirely, but I wonder how much of that might be due to budgetary constraints, since anchoring the series on Earth without huge CGI fights is much cheaper than the alternative.
I liked lanterns, but I think this goes a little too far with the grounded aspect. Even in the finale we have no costume, no real constructs, and John flying as the only reasonably cool use of the powers. I don’t think about what was either In fact the big action episode of the season was also memorable. Luckily, the writing, the acting carried the season, and I really liked it overall. But is the series totally anchored forever? It feels like we have to, at best, save the real cosmic GL action for movie cameos, and I don’t like that.
