Alaska Republican Sen. Dan Sullivan criticized his Democratic opponent Mary Peltola’s campaign for its alleged involvement in recruiting another man named Dan Sullivan to run for Senate. But the outgoing senator did not say during an interview on CNN’s “State of the Union” that aired this morning whether the alleged actions constituted a crime, something many other Republicans, including President Donald Trump, have suggested.

“I’ll let the lawyers figure that out,” Sullivan told CNN’s Jake Tapper. “Whether it’s legal or not, and I think you know there are good arguments on both sides…the key thing I’m focused on is looking at Peltola and his team – and the Democrats in Washington, D.C., and the way they treat Alaskans with disdain.

Sullivan pointed to a more than 150-year-old law, originally passed to combat the Ku Klux Klan, as a possible legal argument involving Peltola’s campaign. The law states that it is illegal for two people to conspire to deprive anyone of their constitutional rights, including the right to vote.

Trump has called in recent days for Peltola, as well as the other Dan Sullivan, to be prosecuted.

Sen. Sullivan did not directly address whether his campaign had proof that Peltola knew about the alleged plan. Instead, he frequently referenced last week’s New York Times report that, quoting Peltola’s former campaign manager, claimed the former Alaska congresswoman is “fully aware” but not directly involved in the project.

“The New York Times article is not a ‘he said, she said’ story. It has a ton of text messages, all exchanged between the people undertaking the project,” Sullivan said.

“Now that this has been revealed, I think a lot of Alaskans, even Democrats, think she’s not fit to hold office,” Sullivan added.
