LIV Golf reportedly lost financial backing from BC Partners, putting league’s future in doubt
LIV Golf might finally be over.
BC Partners has abandoned plans to fund LIV Golf in 2027 and help the league transition to “LIV 2.0.” the Financial Times reported Wednesday. LIV Golf is now reportedly looking to liquidate its remaining assets, likely signaling the end of the company that once caused so much uproar in the golf world.

LIV Golf was struggling to find a way to survive after a chaotic 2026 season. Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund, which has reportedly invested more than $5 billion in the league, announced earlier this year that it would not support LIV Golf moving forward. LIV Golf subsequently filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection.
She found BC Partners, which seemed to be a lifeline for the company as it tried to launch “LIV 2.0” without Saudi funding. BC Partners has committed to investing approximately $300 million in the new version of the league, provided certain conditions are met. One of those conditions had to do with retaining top talent, something LIV Golf has struggled with in recent weeks.
Several big names have already left LIV Golf or announced their intention to do so. The biggest of them all, Jon Rahm, announced his departure from LIV last month and said Tuesday he would accept a Brooks Koepka-style deal to return to the PGA Tour if it were offered to him.

The DP World Tour drew a firm line in the sand this fall, announcing that golfers would not be able to participate in both their tournaments and LIV Golf eventswhich has been authorized in recent years. Tyrrell Hatton, Sergio Garcia, Louis Oosthuizen, Ian Poulter and Graeme McDowell also announced they were done with LIV Golf.
Although he wasn’t alone, Bryson DeChambeau was essentially the only big name left to side with “LIV 2.0.” It has a lot of clout, but LIV Golf is undoubtedly a very, very different league without the other big names it once had.
According to The Athletic, BC Partners no longer believed LIV Golf had enough players to launch a viable league. Neither LIV Golf nor BC Partners have yet to comment publicly. LIV Golf is scheduled to appear in court for a bankruptcy hearing Thursday in New Jersey, which could officially begin the liquidation process.
It now appears that “LIV 2.0” will never make it to the course.

What’s next for Bryson DeChambeau?
It is unclear how the PGA Tour and DP World Tour will react to the permanent closure of LIV Golf, should it officially happen. But DeChambeau is undoubtedly in a tough spot with his golf career.
DeChambeau won twice on the LIV Golf Tour last season and finished second in the season-long race. He missed the cut at the first three major championships of the season before finishing T14 at the British Open – although that came after a wild second-round penalty at Royal Birkdale. The two-time major champion has reportedly been all-in on “LIV 2.0” in recent weeks, and he said last month on the “Figuring Out” podcast that he thought the new version of the league made “total financial sense” and could exist “forever.”
But now DeChambeau is apparently without a home.

Given the current state of affairs, DeChambeau could commit to playing on the DP World Tour for a full season and getting his PGA Tour card back. Patrick Reed, who left LIV Golf, spent the entire 2026 campaign doing just that and will return to the PGA Tour next season.

DeChambeau could also reach a deal with the PGA Tour to return immediately. Brooks Koepka secured a deal in January, via the “Returning Member Program” cost him around $85 million in revenue. It’s unclear if the Tour would offer this again or what it would look like this time around.
Alternatively, DeChambeau could continue to do his own thing and show up only at major championships. He said earlier this year that it would be open continue to grow his YouTube channel and “play in the tournaments that want me.” This path probably wouldn’t be viable long term unless he continues to win major championships.
