Ukraine: Prosecutor General resigns over corruption charges
Accused of corruption, the Prosecutor General of Ukraine Ruslan Kravchenko resigned on Monday, after searches carried out this weekend in his administration as part of a case involving the lucrative sector of fraudulent call centers.
The Ukrainian anti-corruption agency (Nabu) and the prosecutor’s office specializing in these cases (SAP) announced on Saturday that they had uncovered a money laundering network “led by an official from the prosecutor general’s office” and carried out searches.
According to investigators, this network received money to protect fraudulent call centers organizing telephone scams and “legalized fortunes running into millions.” These bribes were spent to acquire real estate, jewelry and other valuables, according to the Nabu.
“I have resigned from my position as prosecutor general,” Ruslan Kravchenko said Monday in a message on Telegram. “I do not want the General Prosecutor’s Office to be used as a tool in a political confrontation. My position regarding the accusations remains unchanged,” he added.
He assured Sunday that the accusations made by the anti-corruption structures were “in no way substantiated” and that his expenses were carried out “in compliance with the legislation in force and the income declared”.
Angelina Jolie appears at a Kharkiv boxing club
American actress Angelina Jolie made a surprise visit to a Kharkiv boxing club during her latest trip to Ukraine, the national boxing federation and the club’s owner said on Monday. In a photo released by the Federation, we can see Angelina Jolie and the son she had with Brad Pitt, Knox, 18, posing in a boxing gym.
“The famous actress Angelina Jolie visited the Spadkoyemets boxing club in Kharkiv,” she commented on Instagram. “His son Knox, with Ukrainian defenders, took part in a muay-thai (Thai boxing, editor’s note) training session at the club.”
Spadkoyemets club owner Pavlo Tchychko said he had “no idea” that the venue’s recent booking would be for Angelina Jolie. “To everyone who asked me – this is not a joke, nor artificial intelligence. It happened completely by chance: Angelina Jolie, to our delight, passed through our room,” he testified in a video on Instagram.
“She congratulated us, said she loved our gym and we thanked her. She asked my son how long he had been playing sports,” he continued. “That’s real class! And his son is the same. He shook hands again and again… It was really great!”
Negotiation update
Steve Witkoff estimated Monday that his tour had allowed “substantial progress” towards the organization of tripartite talks to end the conflict triggered by the Russian invasion in February 2022. “President Trump is working hard to stop the killing and work towards lasting peace,” he assured on X.
Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner met with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Moscow on Saturday, then visited kyiv for the first time ever on Sunday, where they spoke with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. European representatives — French, British and German — took part in these rounds of negotiations on Sunday in kyiv.
The Kremlin announced on Monday that it was “not ruling out” a resumption of tripartite talks, with Russian presidential spokesperson Dmitry Peskov also saying that it was “still too early to talk about the location and precise dates.”
The Ukrainian president, for his part, said he was preparing the rest of the negotiations. “We are coordinating our next steps. We are preparing the next meetings and communications. Ukraine’s proposals are constructive and always will be,” Volodymyr Zelensky said on Facebook.
A senior Ukrainian presidential official told AFP that Donald Trump’s emissaries had presented new “more effective” proposals to end the war, without further details.
Russia resumes strikes on kyiv after three days of truce
Loud explosions were heard early Tuesday in kyiv, AFP journalists noted, as a three-day suspension of Russian strikes on the Ukrainian capital expired overnight.
The capital’s military administration reported a missile attack and invited residents to seek shelter, stressing that “air defense is activated.”
According to authorities, buildings were hit in kyiv itself as well as in the suburban districts of Boryspil and Fastiv. An AFP journalist saw plumes of smoke as well as the glow of a fire.
This Russian attack is the first targeting kyiv in three nights, after the expiration of a mutual truce announced by Moscow and kyiv during a visit by American envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner to these two cities.
The Russian state agency Tass also confirmed that “the three-day moratorium on strikes against kyiv, established during the visit of American negotiators to Ukraine, has ended.”
