Live Updates: Trump Won’t Commit to Reimbursing Federal Advertising Funds
A day after President Donald Trump said he would start paying for controversial taxpayer-funded ads with a campaign account, there is no indication he plans to repay the millions of federal dollars already spent on them.
Nearly $12 million in ads have already been served, according to AdImpact, as part of the $20 million allocated by the Department of Homeland Security. committed to the contract.
But Trump’s plan to pay for the ads with MAGA Inc. does not mean a refund will be forthcoming, said a White House official who was not authorized to speak publicly and spoke on condition of anonymity.
Speaking to reporters Tuesday, Trump said the ads were “really good” and “a promotion of the country that many presidents have done before.” When asked if he would reimburse the funds already spent, he replied: “We will decide.”
The ads, which began airing in late September, glorify Trump and echo his midterm political message. Both Republicans and Democrats said the ads were not an appropriate use of U.S. government money.
