BOSTON —

Jim Boyd, former anchor and reporter for WCVB-TV for nearly four decades, has died. Boyd was 84 years old.

Boyd began his career in public television in the mailroom of WNET-TV in New York in 1961. He later held positions in public affairs and production before joining the staff of WGBH-TV’s “Say Brother.”

Boyd then returned to WNET-TV as associate producer and then producer of the Emmy Award-winning program “News in Perspective.”

For someone who has had enormous success in his career, Jim Boyd says he never made it as a student in New York’s Harlem.

“I loved playing. I loved playing sports. I loved doing things other than going to school, sitting in class, coming home and doing homework. I never really took up school as something that I was excited about. I never really enjoyed it and I was never very successful.”

After struggling in high school, Jim managed to get into college, but called the experience a disaster.

“I was expelled academically from Long Island University in 1961. And the only thing I didn’t know was that it was too much of a burden and too much of a sacrifice for my parents for me to mess it up. the industry, the more I learned about you know, the writing part and the news part, you know, the more excited I got, so eventually, I got excited about something.

Jim worked his way up through the mailroom to production assistant, then producer and finally landing here at WCVB-TV as a reporter in 1972.

He started as a general assignment reporter and eventually moved to anchoring the weekend newscasts and EyeOpener and was co-anchor of the midday newscast with Susan Wornick.

After retiring in 2008, Boyd earned a bachelor’s degree in sociology from Tufts University in 2013.

“I struggle to find the right words to explain how great it was to be able to get this degree and take this step,” Boyd said in an interview with “Chronicle.”

Boyd received the Golden Circle Award from the New England Chapter of the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences in 2011 and was inducted into the Massachusetts Broadcasters Hall of Fame in 2012.

In 2022, Boyd and Wornick made a surprise appearance during WCVB-TV’s 50 Years Fund telethon.

Boyd was an active member of the community, working with several youth organizations.

Boyd is survived by Linda, his wife of 42 years, and three daughters.
