A magnitude 7 earthquake struck southwest China’s Tibet region around 10:33 p.m. (1433 GMT) on Thursday, killing 16 people and injuring 32 others, the official Xinhua news agency reported, citing the Nagqu city emergency management office.
Eleven of the injured are in serious condition, while 21 were lightly injured, Xinhua added.
A Level II earthquake emergency response has been activated in the region, the news agency said.
The US Geological Survey said the quake’s epicenter was in a mountainous area about 190 km east-northeast of Nagqu and 390 km northeast of the regional capital Lhasa.
Local authorities found at least two injured people in a village near the epicenter, and some houses in villages closest to the epicenter have cracks, according to Xinhua.
Videos broadcast by local state media showed people leaving their homes and seeking shelter outside or in their cars parked on the street.
This is the most powerful earthquake to hit China since January 2024.
