Mamdani draws a line on Kimmel on meeting with Trump: ‘Jimmy, I love you, but…’
Democratic socialist Mayor Zohran Mamdani fired back at late night host Jimmy Kimmel as the two spoke about Mamdani’s recent meeting with President Donald Trump.
Kimmel on “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” asked Mamdani: “You are sending a message to the president, have I read?”
“Every now and then we’re in communication, and it’s about Sunnyside Yard, and how we can deliver for the city,” Mamdani responded, according to Variety. “One of the other things that the president talked about and we talked about, and that’s very close to my heart, is Haitian New Yorkers. Their protected status has ended, and I really believe we need to do everything we can for them to have stability. They’re part of the fabric of this city.”
The Sunnyside Yard project in Queens requires the construction of 12,000 new housing units and will create approximately 30,000 jobs.
Mamdani drew the line when Kimmel asked that they could send Trump “a selfie of us right now.”
Mamdani replied, “Jimmy, I love you, but I love housing more.”
Kimmel also played a video clip of the recent meeting between the president and the mayor of New York at the Gracie Mansion.
Mamdani was seen expressionless as Trump made remarks.
“I mean, it’s remarkable,” Kimmel said. “I look at that and I’m like, ‘OK, that’s not a guy I’d want to play poker with.'”
Mamdani said that while Trump was speaking, the mayor was focused solely on getting federal approval for the Sunnyside Yard project.
