New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani said after a phone call with US President Donald Trump that the mother of a 15-year-old Ghanaian boy shot dead in the Bronx would be granted a visa.
Mamdani wrote in an article on X on Saturday that he spoke with Trump about Javits Frimpong, whose mother is seeking to travel to New York to say goodbye to her son.

The American president “agreed to grant him a visa immediately,” the mayor wrote.
“The murder of a child is a pain no parent should have to endure, let alone thousands of miles away,” he wrote.
There was no immediate comment from Trump.
CCTV footage that captured the final moments of Frimpong’s life shows him being chased by three other teenagers on Thursday morning as he walked to school. He was shot in the abdomen and died the same day in hospital. Thousands of people attended vigils held for the teenager across the city.
The 15-year-old had told his father he had been bullied at school. Thomas Frimpong, Javits’ father, called on police to help “bring justice to my son.” Police said they were investigating, but no arrests have yet been made.
Javits’ parents brought him to the United States a year ago in hopes of giving him a better life. Rep. Richie Torres, who represents the Bronx, wrote on social media that “our entire borough mourns a young man who should have had his whole future ahead of him.”
Ghanaian Foreign Minister Sam Okudzeto Ablakwa said on social media that Ghanaian officials are “coordinating with local authorities” and helping Javits’ mother with her visa application. Visa applications from a number of African countries have been severely limited under the Trump administration.
