A man was arrested after allegedly firing a gun on W. Franklin Street in Chapel Hill Friday evening, according to the City of Chapel Hill.
Officers responded to the 100 block of W. Franklin Street around 7 p.m.
The suspect was identified as 18-year-old Axel Zizumbo. He faces charges of carrying a concealed firearm, discharging a firearm within city limits and armed to terrorize the public.
Witnesses told WRAL that many students were in the street at the time of the shooting.
Hannah Mackin, a University of North Carolina student, said she was outside a nearby restaurant when she heard gunshots.
“Everyone started screaming,” Mackin said. “We come upon (the restaurant) … the whole place is just people screaming and hiding. Finally we come out and it’s flooded with cops.”
Mackin said he received a notification from Alert Carolina — UNC’s emergency alert system — around 9 p.m.
Police said no injuries were reported and there was no ongoing threat to the community.
The investigation is still ongoing.
