Man dies after being shot by Sacramento County deputies, sheriff’s office says
A gunman was shot and killed Sunday by Sacramento County deputies, according to the sheriff’s office.
The sheriff’s office said the shooting happened in the 4000 block of Marconi Avenue after a call around 11 a.m. about a man with a gun in his lap who was sleeping outside a car wash.
“Since he was still sleeping, they were able to wait for additional officers to arrive. Once the officers were in place, they woke him up remotely using the car horn,” said Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office Sgt. Ed Igoe.
According to the sheriff’s office, the caller thought the man matched the description of the person who shot him the night before. The sheriff’s office said it was still unclear whether the incidents were related.
The man was woken up remotely by police, according to the sheriff’s office. The sheriff’s office said when he was ordered to put down his gun, he complied, but then started picking it up again.
“At that time, an officer-involved shooting occurred. There were a total of three officers shooting,” Igoe said.
Three officers shot the man and he was taken to the hospital, where he later died, according to the sheriff’s office.
Officials said the three deputies involved in the shooting have been placed on administrative leave.
The shooting remains under investigation. The man killed has not been identified, but the sheriff’s office said he may have been unhoused.
“Of course, it’s a dangerous and very volatile situation when a suspect who allegedly shot at individuals the night before is now located with a gun. There’s nothing more frightening than that,” Igoe said.
No deputies were injured, officials said.
