A man was killed in a shooting at a Midtown Manhattan subway station Saturday, officials said.

It happened on the northbound E train platform at the Seventh Avenue station near West 53rd Street just before 12:30 p.m.

Police said two men got into an argument on the platform. According to the NYPD, the dispute spread to a train that had entered the station and then returned to the platform.

It is not yet known whether the shots were fired on the platform or on the train, police said at a press conference Saturday afternoon.

Authorities say the victim was shot in the chest and transported in critical condition to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead. Police said they would not release the victim’s identity until his family was notified, but the victim was possibly in his 30s.

Police say the shooter fled on foot. No arrests have been made. The New York Police Department has released photos of a person wanted in connection with the shooting. He was last seen wearing a red tracksuit, a black vest and a black mask.

Police are searching for an individual wanted in connection with a fatal shooting at the Seventh Avenue subway station in Midtown Manhattan on October 17, 2026.

NYPD Crime Stoppers

Anyone with information is asked to call the NYPD’s Crime Stoppers hotline at 1-800-577-TIPS (8477), or for Spanish, 1-888-57-PISTA (74782). The public can also submit tips online at the Crime Stoppers website or via X @NYPDTips.

A witness who was on the subway described the chaos after hearing the gunshots.

“I heard the gunshots, so everyone threw themselves on the ground. We sat there for a while and someone said, “Get off the train.” “We got off and saw the police working on the man who had been shot,” said Paul Sampson, who was on the train.

The MTA said it was coordinating with the NYPD and working to retrieve surveillance footage from cameras on the platform and train cars.

“Firearms have no place in transportation, which is why we strongly supported New York State’s legal fight to ensure it is illegal to carry them on the subway,” Kemper said in a statement. “The perpetrator will be arrested and will face maximum consequences from the justice system. Fortunately, no one outside the fight was injured.”

A witness said she and her daughter had just boarded the train and sat down when they heard several shots fired on the platform.

“All of a sudden I heard a gunshot, and then there was like a mass exodus. Everyone started running away, and then there were at least probably three more (shots),” the girl said.

No weapons were found at the scene, according to police. The investigation is ongoing.
