Man shot dead on Midtown subway platform Saturday afternoon, NYPD say
A man was shot and killed at a Midtown subway station Saturday afternoon, police said.
New York police said the shooting happened around noon at the 53rd Street-Seventh Avenue station, which serves the B, D and E lines. It stemmed from an argument between two men that police said started on the platform and spilled onto the train.
It is unclear whether the shot was fired on the platform or on the train. It is also unclear whether the victim knew her killer, police said.
The man, aged in his 30s, was shot in the chest and transported to Bellevue Hospital, where he was pronounced dead upon arrival shortly after 1 p.m., police said. New York police said they were looking for a specific “person of interest” in connection with the murder and posted a photo on social media.
The MTA referred all questions to the NYPD.
“We coordinated the investigation with the New York Police Department from the first minutes, particularly to recover video from platform and train car cameras,” MTA security chief Michael Kemper said in a statement.
The MTA said three people were involved in the dispute.
The D and E trains in Manhattan are disrupted in both directions while police investigate, according to MTA service alerts.
As of Oct. 11, four people had been shot on the transit system this year, compared to two during the same period in 2025, according to NYPD statistics.
This is a developing story based on preliminary police information and will be updated.
