Man shot in vehicle during ICE raid in Marble Hill, Manhattan
MARBLE HILL, Manhattan (WABC) — A man in a vehicle was shot and killed Thursday during an ICE operation in Upper Manhattan, officials said.
It happened shortly after 4 p.m. in the Marble Hill neighborhood of upper Manhattan.
Several shots were fired during what appears to be an ICE operation, according to a city official. They say the person was in the vehicle at the time of the shooting and a child, believed to be a boy around 5 years old, was in the back seat. He was unharmed.
At the time of the shooting, ICE agents were attempting to arrest a person under investigation for ties to migrants involved in the shooting of an off-duty customs officer at Fort Washington Park in July 2025.
Two Dominican nationals involved in the case were convicted in federal court earlier this week, while state charges against them remain pending.
ICE later released a statement saying it was “conducting a targeted enforcement operation in the Bronx, New York, to arrest a criminal illegal alien from the Dominican Republic with a prior criminal conviction for robbery and multiple prior arrests for assault, robbery, drug possession, and weapons possession.”
They confirmed that an ICE officer fired his weapon, injuring the man.
The NYPD said the shooting involved federal law enforcement officers and that NYPD members were not involved in the incident and were not at the scene at the time of the shooting.
The man who was shot was transported to a nearby hospital, where he is currently conscious and receiving medical treatment, according to police.
At a news conference hosted by the New York Immigration Coalition, Congressman Adriano Espaillat said he spoke with the family of the man who was shot and they confirmed the child was in the family’s custody. The congressman said ICE agents did not allow him to see the man at the hospital when he went to see him.
Witnesses described a chaotic scene after reporting hearing several gunshots ring out Thursday evening.
“I only heard about four gunshots, but I thought it was a car backfiring,” one woman said. “I thought no, it was definitely gunshots, so I ran to my window and all of a sudden I heard cops running, not walking down the street, and followed shortly after by more cops, then more cops and ICE agents. Everyone was running. I think it’s horrible.”

City officials were informed that ICE was using a nearby Target parking lot on 225th Street as a staging area.
ICE recently set a daily goal of 3,000 arrests nationwide, up from 2,000, sources told ABC News, a report denied by the Department of Homeland Security.
Lawmakers and immigration activists respond to the shooting
The shooting sparked a swift response from local politicians, including Mayor Zohran Mamdani and Gov. Kathy Hochul.
The mayor said he called the president and will demand an end to ICE’s actions when they speak, saying, “I will not stand idly by while ICE agents terrorize our communities.” Our thoughts are with the injured New Yorker and his family this evening.
Governor Hochul calls for “full transparency” from federal authorities.
“I have been informed of this afternoon’s shooting involving federal law enforcement officers in the Bronx,” Hochul said in the statement posted to social media. “We expect federal authorities to provide a full and transparent account of the circumstances surrounding this incident. New Yorkers deserve to know exactly what happened and why.”
Public Advocate Jumaane Williams, who attended the news conference hosted by the New York Immigration Coalition, released a statement saying he heard the anger and fear of the Marble Hill community, and that he also heard “their determination, their commitment to stand with our immigrant neighbors under attack.”
He added: “They belong in our city – not ICE.”
The shooting also sparked reactions from the city’s anti-immigration activists.
“ICE’s violent tactics pose a clear danger to all New Yorkers, as today’s shooting in a residential neighborhood demonstrates. This incident is another reminder of the unchecked and rampant violence that ICE is spreading in our communities,” said Murad Awawdeh, president and CEO of the New York Immigration Coalition.
