Margarita mix-up leaves Chili customers with burns
A round of margaritas at a Chili’s in North Carolina received an unintentional kick that required five people to seek medical attention. Health officials say three Forest City customers suffered chemical burns in and around their mouths after sipping drinks made with a granular cleaning product mistaken for sugar, report The United States today. Two employees who later tasted the drinks experienced similar symptoms and all five went to urgent care centers.
Investigators say a pressure washing contractor left the degreaser in an unlabeled container that was then used at the Margarita Station. “It’s almost like a little tray where they put water and lime juice,” says Megan Rollins of the Foothills Health District, according to the New York Times. “And then on the other side of the tray is a place to put salt or sugar.” The health district briefly revoked the restaurant’s restaurant permit, then reinstated it after a cleaning and inspection, according to WRAL. No information was available on the severity of the injuries.
