Everyone knows that the first rule of lying is to stick to your story. Well, maybe everyone except Martha Stewart. On Tuesday, Stewart had a change of heart about her controversial unhoused Halloween costume, which she shared on social media last week. After the multi-millionaire received backlash for his look, which included a “HELP ME!” ! ” message she had scribbled on a clipboard, she deleted the message and apologized, saying she was trying to “raise more awareness about the very serious issue of homelessness.” But that’s not the excuse she used while addressing a crowd in Florida Wednesday morning. Speaking at the CrossCountry Mortgage Sales Rally in Orlando (???), Stewart decided to blame the beloved king of daytime television, Craig Melvin, for the debacle.
“What is his name on the Today show, Craig,” she said, starting off on the right foot, “he spilled chocolate all over my white sweater, which I was going to wear on Halloween night. When I picked up the sweater, I said, “Oh my God, it’s so dirty and I only have a few minutes to get ready for this Halloween party.” So the simplest costume was to dress up as a tramp.
Against her publicist’s wishes, probably, she continued: “I looked at myself, I was like, ‘You really look hungry and homeless.’ So I wrote a sign that said “I’m hungry,” and boy, did it blow up.
Here’s the thing about Melvin’s scapegoating. According to video evidence of the incident, he spilled the slightest hint of chocolate on Stewart’s sweater. The incident occurred Friday morning when Stewart, dressed as herself at the Milan Olympics, taught the hapless crew of the Today show the animators how to decorate spider web cakes with chocolate ganache. Melvin, dressed as Snoop Dogg at the Olympics, picked up a piping bag filled with liquid chocolate. Based on the sound of Stewart’s screams (and photos of her leaving the studio), two drops of chocolate landed on her lower half. In other words, it wasn’t a spill that ruined a sweater. Am I to believe that Martha Stewart, the American housewife, doesn’t have a safe method for removing stains? Or at least a Tide pen?
Technically speaking, both of Stewart’s stories could be true. It’s entirely possible that her costume was a last-minute decision and she thought posting it would “raise awareness.” Maybe she should clear that up if that’s the case – and leave Craig Melvin out of it.
