Martha Stewart responds to backlash over Halloween costume
Martha Stewart has released a statement after sparking backlash for dressing up as a homeless person for Halloween. The media mogul’s costume choice for Saturday’s holiday, which included tattered clothing, dirt-inspired makeup and a sign reading “I’m hungry. Help me!!,” was quickly deemed offensive and in poor taste by fans. (The costume photo she posted on Instagram was quickly deleted.)
“I’m sorry that my Halloween costume yesterday, which was intended to raise awareness about the very serious topic of homelessness, offended people, which was never my intention,” Stewart told Page Six in a statement released Sunday.
She continued: “Homelessness continues to remain one of America’s greatest current challenges and crises, something I care deeply about and have devoted much time and effort to supporting charities combatting this current social epidemic. The businesswoman also said she remained “determined to continue making a difference.”
On Saturday, Stewart also shared a carousel of images of her backyard with festive decor captioned: “Halloween night waiting for trick or treaters!” In the days leading up to the holiday, Stewart appeared on “Today” to share fun ideas for Halloween, “including my no-bake spider web cheesecake, witch’s brew, and gruesome goulash,” she wrote on social media. “I always enjoy dressing up in fun and creative costumes when my busy schedule allows.”
Variety previously reported that Cate Blanchett is set to star as Stewart in the upcoming “Good Thing” biopic about the lifestyle media mogul’s career, with “Zola” director Janicza Bravo helming the project.
