Contains spoilers for “VisionQuest” Season 1, Episode 7 – “Immolation”

You know how the saying goes: whenever you see Ultron, you should suspect Ultron. Even though the exact thing you suspect him of might be wrong, he’s probably up to no good anyway.

“VisionQuest” finally reveals who the series’ mysterious client is in episode 7, “Immolation.” Barring any twists in the season finale and much to the shock of no one in particular, the person going after Vision (and T’Nia Miller’s Jocasta, it seems) has always been James Spader’s AI villain. Presumably to allay suspicion, Ultron even mocks the client when the avatar’s dark figure appears to Jocasta, mocking his artificially creepy voice and dismissing him as human. Meanwhile, the client acts like he doesn’t know who Ultron is, which is frankly quite a feat considering the “Avengers: Age of Ultron” antagonist’s impact on the Marvel Cinematic Universe and the creation of the MCU’s Sokovia Accords.

Yet the end of “Immolation” reveals that Ultron is behind everything after all, with Jocasta and FRIDAY (Orla Brady) realizing the truth a little too late. Like Vision (Paul Bettany), Jocasta is deactivated at the end of the episode, and both are at Ultron’s mercy. And because Ultron wouldn’t be Ultron without the death of a major character late in the game, his villain reveal involves him dropping FRIDAY until his apparent death – and Paladin’s (Todd Stashwick) van suffering a nasty case of a bazooka-induced explosion.

Ultron didn’t really hide his antagonism

Since his creation, Ultron has made it clear that he is not a particular fan of being held to the “strings.” He reiterates this position several times after discovering that Vision has kept the villain in his mind space since the end of “Avengers: Age of Ultron”. In “VisionQuest”, he is also quite open about the fact that if he were granted freedom, he could very well attack humanity again. Additionally, he has already shown that he can be incredibly cunning, playing other artificial intelligences like a violin on several occasions throughout the series.

In other words, Ultron’s return in the MCU has been very true to the openly conflicted character who tends to think he’s the smartest entity in the room (and is often right). In fact, even the cute hat the customer avatar wears is directly related to Ultron’s new penchant for headwear. It seems that Ultron himself has barely bothered to hide his overall villainy – he’s simply managed to fool everyone about the exact nature of his animosity thus far.
