‘Marvel’s Wolverine’ tops game sales chart

PlayStation and Insomniac Games’ “Marvel’s Wolverine” debuted as the best-selling game of September in the United States, according to analytics firm Circana.
Using comprehensive game sales data, both physical and digital, the PlayStation 5 exclusive generated the highest launch month dollar sales for a Sony-published game since “Helldivers II” in early 2024.
This suggests that it beat “Stellar Blade”, “Ghost of Yotei”, “Death Stranding 2”, “Astro Bot”, “Marathon” and “Saros”, as well as the remasters/remakes of “Horizon: Zero Dawn”, “Days Gone” and “Until Dawn”.
It also contributed to a 43% increase in PlayStation 5 revenue compared to the same period last year and (along with the imminent release of GTA6) pushed Sony hardware sales to their highest levels since May 2025.
Globally, “Wolverine” was the second best-selling PS5 game in September, behind only EA Sports FC 27. It did so despite only being available for half the month.
Good news for the entire industry, eight of the ten best-selling games in September were new releases, while “NBA 2K27” overtook “Resident Evil: Requiem” to become the best-selling game of 2026 in the United States. Both “NBA 2K27” and “Wolverine” have faced strong backlash online, although for different reasons.
“007 First Light,” “MLB: The Show 26” and “Crimson Desert” occupy third to fifth positions.
Total video game hardware unit sales fell 3% in September compared to last year: PlayStation 5 increased 22% year over year, Switch 2 unit sales fell 14%, and Xbox Series sales fell 27%. Xbox console unit sales are now at an all-time low.
