Mason Rook is taking his last-minute withdrawal from the September 29 WWE NXT card hard. After WWE announced that he was not medically cleared to challenge Grayson Waller for the NXT Championship, Rook issued an emotional message making it clear that missing out on the biggest opportunity of his NXT run was completely out of his reach.
WWE announced the major change ahead of the September 29 episode, confirming that Rook could not compete as planned. He had earned the championship opportunity by winning a Triple Threat match and was supposed to face Waller one-on-one for the title. Shortly after the announcement, Rook took to Twitter/X and apologized to fans while admitting how much he wanted to wrestle.
“I’m sorry. Sometimes life is cruel. Every fiber of my being wanted to compete tonight but unfortunately, it’s out of my control.”
Rook also didn’t make the message seem like a long-term setback. He ended his statement by promising that whatever keeps him from going out tonight won’t derail his momentum.
“I promise this is just a speed bump and not a roadblock.”
This is about as blunt as Rook could be without revealing exactly what medical issue kept him from being exonerated. WWE has not announced any additional details on his condition or given a timetable for his return to action.
The timing couldn’t be worse for Rook. This was to be his first NXT Championship opportunity after weeks of building towards Grayson Waller, including a heated face-off where the two took personal shots at each other before their title match was made official.
Waller still has to defend the NXT Championship tonight, so WWE isn’t giving up on the title match entirely. The company has not revealed who will replace Rook, leaving a mysterious challenger looming over the series.
Rook clearly wanted this one, but his message makes it seem like he’s already planning to return rather than dwelling on the opportunity that’s gone. For now, the title shot is over, but Rook makes it clear he doesn’t see this as the end of his pursuit.
