
Medical plane disappears near Nantucket with 6 people on board, authorities say
A medical plane with six people on board disappeared near Nantucket while flying from Bermuda to Boston early Saturday, according to the U.S. Coast Guard and Federal Aviation Administration.
The FAA lost contact with the plane around 1 a.m. local time and issued a search and rescue alert for the Gulfstream G-100.
The search was being conducted off the coast of Nantucket, according to the U.S. Coast Guard Northeast District. The Coast Guard described the numerous assets involved in the search, including an HC-144 Ocean Sentry aircraft, an HC-130 Hercules aircraft, an MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter, a 47-foot motor rescue boat and the FRC William Sparling, a Sentinel-class rapid response cutter.
The aircraft is registered to Latitutde Air Ambulance, according to the tail number provided by the US Coast Guard.
The plane took off Friday around 11:40 p.m. ET, according to FlightAware data.
Bermuda airport operator Skyport said in a statement to The Associated Press that the plane left Bermuda’s LF Wade International Airport overnight for the flight to Massachusetts. The Canadian-registered ambulance plane had four crew members and two passengers on board.
The Bermuda government said the X had been in contact with the families of those on board. “We pray that all six people will be found safe and sound and we thank the search and rescue teams for their continued efforts,” said Premier David Burt.
He disappeared after about 1 hour and 45 minutes of flight. FlightAware data shows it quickly went from about 24,000 feet in the air to 11,000 feet before losing contact.
The plane was scheduled to land at Boston’s Logan International Airport around 1:30 a.m. local time.
