MEP Glucksmann wins center-left French primary, becomes presidential candidate – POLITICO
“This result expresses something powerful: that a left faithful to its values can unite, govern and win,” the MEP wrote online.
“We are here to win the presidential election: turn the page on macronism, stop the far right and change our lives,” he added.
But Glucksmann, a staunch supporter of Ukraine and critic of China, now faces a much bigger challenge: how to beat far-left leader Jean-Luc Mélenchon. The leader of France Insoumise is progressing in the polls, with the latest Ifop poll giving him 14% to 17% support, compared to 11% for Glucksmann.
In recent weeks, Glucksmann has campaigned against forming an alliance with the far-left leader.
Three other candidates were running in the primary, including former minister Ségolène Royal and deputies Jérôme Guedj and Emmanuel Maurel.
Some 140,000 people were registered to vote for the primaries – including 80,000 who paid 15 euros to participate but were not members of any of the parties whose candidates were in the running – raising uncertainty over the outcome.
The online voting platform was also the target of a cyberattack shortly after its opening, organizers said in a statement on Friday, but “was never disrupted” and “the integrity of the recorded votes was not compromised”.
