Meta’s Muse exceeds 5 million downloads, faster than ChatGPT, Claude
Meta’s (META) popular Muse AI agent continues to gain momentum, surpassing 5 million downloads on Wednesday, according to market intelligence firm Sensor Tower.
This milestone comes less than a month after Meta launched the service on September 8. It is currently only available in the United States and Canada.
For comparison, OpenAI’s ChatGPT (OPAI.PVT) reached 5 million downloads in 56 days. It took Grok of SpaceX (SPCX) and Claude of Anthropic (ANTH.PVT) 103 days and 492 days, respectively, to reach the goal.
It’s worth noting that ChatGPT was the first mainstream generative AI chatbot, launching in November 2022, which could have contributed to its relatively slow start.
Muse also remains the #1 app on the Apple App Store and Google Play Store. But that doesn’t make Muse the fastest app to surpass 5 million downloads in such a short time.
Sensor Tower notes that Disney+, HBO Max, Threads, “Candy Crush,” “Pokémon Go” and “Fortnite” all had more than 5 million downloads during the same period.
What makes Muse’s rise in the rankings impressive is the fact that it is an AI agent designed for consumers. Until now, these platforms have largely been the domain of more tech-savvy users and developers, but Muse’s interface, which includes an avatar and customizable anthropomorphic abilities, makes it relatively simple and easy to use.
Meta also invests advertising money to attract attention to the app. Sensor Tower says the company took the lion’s share of its in-house advertising, garnering 50% of “daily home impressions” in the two weeks between September 14 and 27.
Muse was also among the “Top 15 Brands in U.S. Ad Impressions” during this period.
The app is free to download and use, with Meta saying it will eventually require a small cut of sales made through the agent.
AI agents continue to gain traction among Silicon Valley’s tech giants. On Tuesday, OpenAI launched its own agentic AI platform with an equally customizable and cute avatar called Dots.
While Dots is aimed at the enterprise market for now, OpenAI CFO Sarah Friar told CNBC that the company will eventually offer the platform to consumers as well.
