Comments Off on Michael Mann accidentally shoots himself in the leg at the shooting range

Michael Mann, the director of “Heat” and “The Insider,” shot himself in the leg Saturday at a Los Angeles shooting range.

A spokesperson for the filmmaker said that “a weapon accidentally discharged while holstered, resulting in a superficial injury.” Mann was treated at a local hospital for a minor subcutaneous injury. He is being released. The event took place during target practice. Mann is an experienced shooter who has been training on ranges for decades.

A Los Angeles spokesperson said officers responded to a “shots fired” incident at The Range LA around 4 p.m. An investigation determined the shooting was “accidental.” TMZ broke the news of the shooting.

Mann, 83, is known for directing gritty crime stories, many of which feature cops and criminals and take place in urban landscapes. He was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Director for his work on the 1999 journalistic thriller “The Insider,” and the film was nominated for Best Picture. Mann’s other credits include “Thief” (1981), “Manhunter” (1986), “The Last of the Mohicans” (1992), “Ali” (2001), “Collateral” (2004) and “Public Enemies” (2009). As a producer, Mann received an Academy Award nomination for Martin Scorsese’s 2004 drama “The Aviator.”

Mann’s most recent credit was 2023’s “Ferrari,” and he’s set to film a “Heat” sequel based on a novel he co-wrote with Meg Gardiner. This film will star Christian Bale, Leonardo DiCaprio and Stephen Graham. Mann also helped create the ’80s TV hit “Miami Vice” and later directed a film version of the series.
