Michigan made a quarterback change while Kyle Whittingham and the crew on the bench Bryce Underwood For Tommy Carr ahead of this week’s match against Indianaaccording to On3’s Pete Nakos. The Wolverines are 4-2 this year, the first season under Whittingham.
Underwood, a second-year starter, struggled again in a new offense. In six games, Underwood completed 58.1 percent of his passes for 924 yards and five touchdowns, along with a Big Ten-leading six interceptions.

In the Week 7 matchup against State of PennsylvaniaWhittingham made a quarterback change mid-game. Underwood did not play in the second half while Carr took over and helped the Wolverines to the victory. Carr completed 5 of 7 passes for 47 yards through the air while rushing for 36 yards and a touchdown, which proved to be the game-winner.
After the match, Whittingham I kept it close to the vest when asked if Underwood would remain the starter. He told reporters he was “not ready to make that decision yet” but said Oct. 19 that the staff knew who would start against Indiana.
Underwood’s recruitment to Michigan was a major storyline for the 2025 season. Originally a LSU commit, Underwood reversed his commitment to Sherrone Moore and the Wolverines while landing a massive NIL deal. Its On3 NIL valuation is $3 million.
As a member of the Class of 2025, Underwood was a five-star-plus recruit from Belleville (Mich.) High, according to the Rivals Industry Ranking. He was the No. 1 overall prospect in the state, the No. 1 quarterback in the class and the No. 1 overall prospect in the class.
“We’re going to look at everything,” Whittingham said after Minnesota’s loss. “I don’t want to sit here and make a decision without watching this tape. But we’ve had some good individual performances so far this year in some stretches and in some games.
“One positive…the defense has played well all season. There have been a lot of good things on defense. But it’s getting to the point where they can’t hold on anymore. And unfortunately, it got to that point in the second half.”

Carr, a freshman, now gets the nod for Michigan. He also comes from football royalty. In addition to his brother CJ Carr starting as a QB for Notre Dame, Tommy Carr’s father Jason played as a QB for Michigan (1992-95) and both of his grandfathers are in the College Football Hall of Fame.
Tommy Carr’s grandfather, Lloyd, was Michigan’s head coach from 1995-2007, coached the 1997 national championship team and went 122-40 in 13 seasons. Tommy Carr’s other grandfather, Tom Curtis, also played safety at Michigan from 1966 to 1969 and was a two-time All-American, who later played for the Baltimore Colts and won Super Bowl V.
Tommy Carr appeared in the blowout win over UTEP earlier this season and completed two passes for 23 yards and a touchdown. Now he’ll get the full playbook as the Wolverines desperately search for a win against Penn State.
