Micron just delivered a monster quarter, but the stock is in freefall. The reason is obvious.

Comments Off on Micron just delivered a monster quarter, but the stock is in freefall. The reason is obvious.

On September 30, Micron technology (UM +1.73%) released a monstrous fourth quarter financial results report. The company has set records in terms of revenue, profitability and cash generation. Usually, stellar results give investors plenty of reasons to celebrate.

However, Micron stock has moved in the opposite direction over the past month. As of market close on Oct. 22, shares have fallen about 20% since Micron reported earnings and were trading nearly 29% below their all-time high.

What is important to understand is that Micron’s liquidation is not a reflection of a deterioration in its business. Instead, investors are concerned about the sustainability of artificial intelligence (AI) spending, high valuations and the likelihood that the memory sector’s unusually high profitability won’t last forever. Here’s what savvy investors need to know.

Micron’s earnings report was a blast

For the fiscal fourth quarter (period ended September 3), Micron generated revenue of $54.2 billion, representing nearly 380% year-over-year growth and a 31% sequential increase. The profitability was even more impressive. The company’s gross margin reached 87%, up from 45% the previous year. At the same time, earnings per share (EPS) jumped to $32.87, up from just $2.83 a year earlier.

The company’s Core Data Center unit generated $18 billion in revenue, up from $1.6 billion last year. Additionally, the Cloud Memory segment contributed an additional $16.3 billion, almost 4 times more than the fourth quarter of 2025.

Micron also generated nearly $44 billion in operating cash flow and $33 billion in adjusted free cash flow, highlighting that earnings growth translates into strong cash generation. Management expects this momentum to continue. For the first quarter of fiscal 2027, Micron was targeting revenue of $61.5 billion and EPS of $37.84. So why are investors selling stocks like there’s no tomorrow?

3 reasons why Micron stock is collapsing

The first explanation behind Micron’s liquidation is that the company is not alone. Over the past month, semiconductor stocks have seen a broader sell-off. THE iShares Semiconductor ETF (SOXX +1.45%) has declined 15% since Micron reported its results. This demonstrates that the weakness in the chip market extends beyond Micron itself.

Second, investors are increasingly concerned about the cost and sustainability of AI capital expenditure (capex). Hyperscalers such as Amazon, Microsoft, AlphabetAnd Metaplatforms budget hundreds of billions of dollars each year for data centers and advanced processors.

These investments require significant financing beyond the generation of organic cash flow. Bond yields are high as companies increasingly tap debt markets, leading investors to question how long spending on AI infrastructure can realistically continue to accelerate.

Recent developments have reinforced some of these concerns. For example, Tesla recently cut its planned investments for 2026 by 20%, from more than $25 billion to around $20 billion. While the move doesn’t establish a broader framework for hyperscalers’ spending trends, it illustrates how some of the most ambitious AI developers are being forced to balance infrastructure investments with financial discipline.

The third concern is the most obvious: Investors remain wary of the sustainability of the memory supercycle given the cyclical nature of the sector. If demand eventually exceeds the current limited supply of high-bandwidth memory (HBM), average selling prices will normalize and profit margins will erode.

Micron Stock: Buying the Dip or the Value Trap?

At approximately $887 per share, Micron trades at a forward price-to-earnings (P/E) ratio of 7. This is a modest valuation for a company experiencing Micron’s level of revenue and earnings growth, supported by secular demand for its infrastructure.

In this context, I think Micron presents an interesting opportunity to buy the dip rather than a value trap. At 7 times forward earnings, I think investors have already priced considerable downside risk into Micron stock. For this reason, I consider Micron an interesting AI stock to buy and hold.
