Microsoft employee shares his 'truth' about using AI on Xbox and beyond

Update (Monday October 19, 2026, 8:30 p.m.): As you can see below, these tweets have now been deleted and the account appears to have been completely deleted.

Original story: There’s obviously been a lot of talk over the last few years, and especially the last few months, about how AI is making huge waves within the games industry and changing the way we think about both gaming and game development.

Just a few days ago, Asha Sharma revealed something called Xbox Labs which appears be an experimental division of AI to help conjure up new ideas for the future, but its accompanying statement did not specifically mention AI.

Today, a senior business strategy manager at Microsoft unexpectedly shared some thoughts on the topic of AI, Xbox and the gaming industry as a whole, saying it’s “time to accept” that games will use AI in 2026.

He even indicated that he could be fired for his comments, although we certainly hope that doesn’t happen!

Here are some examples of what he had to say:

I’m happy to take the hit if it means hundreds of people on Xbox can stop pretending they don’t use AI. It’s time to accept and move on.— Brandon Stirrup (@brandonstirrup) October 18, 2026

Gaming is the only industry that is slowing the transition because users have negative sentiment. Everyone accepts reality.— Brandon Stirrup (@brandonstirrup) October 19, 2026

Video games are the only industry in which executives are afraid to talk about AI. Users want the truth. We use AI.— Brandon Stirrup (@brandonstirrup) October 19, 2026

I love Xbox and Microsoft and have spent over 10 years proving it. My goal is to put an end to this so we can move forward as a company, even if some will persecute me for it: we use AI, as all companies do in 2026.— Brandon Stirrup (@brandonstirrup) October 19, 2026

Before all of this, the Microsoft employee pointed out that he had coded a “bad but improveable” game in just three hours and that he believed that anyone could now make a game. He then wondered how much better it could be if “two people helped me for a year.”

Anyway, you get the point: Brandon wants to raise awareness that AI is being used in the gaming industry, but (at least in his opinion) many people avoid talking about it because “users have a negative feeling.”

So, what do you think? Do you agree with what is said here? Let us know in the comments.
