LAST September 27, 3 p.m. 49ers star wide receiver Mike Evans has been ruled out for the remainder of Sunday’s game against the Cardinals with a rib injury.
Evans needed to be helped off the field by 49ers coaches late in the first half after being hit over the middle by Arizona safety Budda Baker before being carted off the field.
The 33-year-old receiver has been pretty banged up this season. He missed time in training camp with a quad strain, foot injury and groin strain and missed time this week with a hip injury he suffered late in last week’s game. But Evans has been in uniform for the first three games and 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan said Evans has been “everything as advertised as a person and a player” during a news conference Friday.
But even though Evans made some big plays Sunday, there are now much bigger injury concerns at the already depleted wide receiver position.
September 27, 2:30 p.m. San Francisco 49ers star wide receiver Mike Evans had to be helped off the field in the second quarter of Sunday’s Week 3 game against the Arizona Cardinals.
Evans was listed as questionable for Sunday’s game because of a hip injury, but he played half of a big first half. But in the second quarter, Evans was hit by Cardinals safety Budda Baker on a play. One play later, Evans was targeted by quarterback Brock Purdy but the pass fell incomplete. After the play, Evans tripped and required significant assistance to leave the field.
It was unclear what Evans injured, but reporters covering the team said Evans could barely move on the sideline before being carried off the field to the 49ers locker room.
Evans had his hands on the ball on both of the Niner’s first-half touchdowns Sunday. Evans caught a pass from Purdy, then ran to Deebo Samuel for an 82-yard touchdown. This remarkable play resulted in Evans getting credit for the reception and six receiving yards, while Samuel got the other 76 yards on his stats. (Yes, Samuel had 76 receiving yards with no receptions.)
In the next quarter, Evans then caught a ball from Purdy in the end zone for his own touchdown, this one for 23 yards. Evans finished the half with three catches for 38 yards and a touchdown, his second of the season for the 49ers.
The 49ers lead their NFC West rivals 17-6 at halftime, where they will surely get an update on their veteran star receiver.
