Hegseth fired top military planner for misconduct, alleged leaks, official says
War Secretary Pete Hegseth fired Lt. Gen. Brett Sylvia, a key war planner at the Pentagon, alleging that Sylvia met with reporters to leak classified information, the War Department said.
A War Department official said Sylvia, although she has the title of director of strategy, plans and policy on the Joint Chiefs of Staff, otherwise known in the military as J5, was not a central planner for Operation Epic Fury against Iran, a campaign that is the responsibility of U.S. Central Command and its chief, Navy Adm. Brad Cooper.
Sylvia is under investigation for leaking classified information about the Iran war, the Russia-Ukraine conflict and more, the official told Fox News.
The official alleged that Sylvia began meeting with reporters outside the Pentagon to release classified information because of a Pentagon media policy requiring reporters to be accompanied inside the building.
The official also said the investigation into Sylvia remains active and has been referred to the Justice Department, noting that Hegseth took immediate action and fired Sylvia in order to protect national security.
The Atlantic was first to report the firing and said Sylvia did not respond to a request for comment.
