Moment Margaret Hamilton receives the Presidential Medal of Honor
The computer scientist behind the groundbreaking research that sent NASA astronauts to the Moon has died at the age of 90.
Margaret Hamilton was a pioneer in her field, leading the team that developed the software for NASA’s Apollo missions, who coined the term “software engineering.”
And in 2016, she received the Presidential Medal of Honor – the nation’s highest civilian honor – from Barack Obama in a White House ceremony.
“To say that Hamilton was a pioneer – to say that she was ahead of her time – would be a dramatic understatement,” MIT said in its statement announcing Hamilton’s death, before acknowledging that she was a software engineer before the industry became mainstream.
