More survivors emerge following deadly Bend elementary school shooting
Five students and four teachers were in the special education classroom at Silver Rail Elementary School in Bend Thursday afternoon when a 16-year-old assailant burst into the room and shot three children, ages 5, 8 and 11, and a teacher, Scott Maben, a spokesman for the Bend-La Pine School District, said Monday.
The shooting also injured a student, 7-year-old Saylor Graham, and another staff member, special education staff member Becky Drury, police said.
But police had not previously reported that there was another child in the classroom who survived the incident, as well as another special education staff member.
“Two others were there,” Maben told The Oregonian/OregonLive via text message Monday. He said he did not know the age of the fifth student.
“They were not physically harmed by the attacker,” Maben said. “I can’t say if they were injured running or hiding. (The school district has) not received any details on that at this time.”
All staff members, including 25-year-old learning specialist Megan Lambert who was killed, were direct employees of the school district, Maben said.
The horrific encounter unfolded within minutes and only ended after a teacher inside the special education classroom tried to push the gun away from the 16-year-old assailant as he opened fire on those in the room, and when a parent at the school who was pursuing the teen shot him.
The shooter was last enrolled in Bend-La Pine schools in November 2025, Maben said. He previously attended Silver Rail as a special needs student, along with three other schools in the district and a district office-run program that Maben described as an option for students who need “additional support.”
The events also added Oregon to a grim and growing list of states rocked by a deadly elementary school shooting.
Police continue to look for clues to understand what motivated the suspect.
Bend-La Pine School District school buildings remained closed Monday and Tuesday; social media was flooded with local parents offering to watch their co-workers’ children who had to return to work.
The exception is Silver Rail itself. Maben said discussions about when students will return to school are ongoing and will be conducted after consultation with building staff and parents.
On Monday, Drury’s husband, who was rushed to the St. Charles Bend campus for treatment, said in a statement that his wife continues to recover from her injuries.
“She still has a long way to go,” Will Drury said. “She is an extraordinary woman who continues to show courage and determination through it all. To anyone who knows my wife, this will come as no surprise.”
