MTG Warhammer 40K Commander Deck Reprints Officially Confirmed by Wizards of the Coast

Wizards of the Coast told IGN that its Magic: The Gathering Warhammer 40K Commander Decks, originally printed in 2022 as part of the Universes Beyond series, have seen a new print run and will be available to order again soon.

The four decks, which marked the first precons beyond Magic’s own universe, were well received at launch but were largely relegated to the secondary market. Decks are currently commanding high resale prices, costing hundreds of dollars at retailers like TCGplayer.

Magic’s Warhammer 40K decks return

Following reports that game stores could order Warhammer 40K precon decks through their order forms, IGN has reached out to Wizards of the Coast for comment.

“Yes, we can confirm that we have completed a small reprint of the Commander decks that will soon be available to distributors and stores,” a Wizards of the Coast spokesperson said.

“Fans and WPN retailers should check availability with their distributors, as this may vary by region.”

The four decks each focus on a specific faction in Warhammer 40K history, set in Games Workshop’s miniature wargaming universe. Ruinous Powers is a Chaos deck, Tyranid Swarm is all about xenomorph-like Tyranids, Necron Dynasty is a mono-black deck that relies on the mysterious undead machines, while Forces of the Imperium focuses on Imperial forces.

Ahead of the decks’ launch, Magic lead designer Mark Rosewater said in a blog post: “There are currently no plans to create in-universe Magic versions of new cards in Warhammer 40K Commander decks (we are creating in-universe ones for Secret Lair cards), but we have the capacity to do so if necessary on a card-by-card basis.”

This means that while it’s possible that deck-exclusive cards could be reprinted with in-universe artwork and names, a reprint should make it much easier for collectors to get their hands on all four. And while it’s only a “small” reprint, adding more copies to the market could also alleviate some of the resale price hikes.

However, Wizards’ statement did not confirm whether the all-foil collector’s versions of the decks would also be reprinted. It’s also unclear how much the reprinted games will cost (each initially retailed for a suggested retail price of $59.99). Still, if you’ve been waiting for one of the four, it looks like your patience will be rewarded.

Warhammer 40K is currently the center of attention. Dawn of War IV will bring back the RTS franchise this December, while Total War: Warhammer 40K is also set to release next year. Henry Cavill’s Warhammer 40K cinematic universe is also moving forward.

Meanwhile, Magic: The Gathering will receive six sets in 2027, with three confirmed so far, and more Universes Beyond sets will be announced.
