Mysterious 90-minute heist interrupts Berlin Phil concert at Carnegie Hall
After a spectacular season opener, the featured performers hit the rocks last night.
This is from a member of the public:
I was at the Berlin Phil concert at Carnegie Hall today, which was delayed by over an hour. The orchestra sat on stage, in silence, for over 10 minutes (maybe up to 15 minutes?) after tune-up, before anything was said. Eventually, we were told it was because a “guest” had suffered a serious fall and was waiting for “medical services.” Of course, there was a lot of speculation among the audience about what this meant: was it Maestro Petrenko and they were trying to groom his assistant to conduct? Was it Víkingur Ólafsson, and they were madly looking for a replacement (and he was replacing Daniil Trifonov on the tour) or trying to figure out how to rearrange the concert to replace the Brahms Concerto with something else? There were some updates of a man in a burgundy blazer holding up a microphone, and almost 90 minutes late, Mo. Petrenko and Mr. Ólafsson arrived on stage and the concert continued. The only changes were that there was no solo piano encore after Brahms (as the audience seemed to want) and the intermission was truncated to around 10 minutes.
If this was a medical emergency, one has to wonder why the usual call was not made from the scene: “Is there a doctor in the house?”
This shows the indecision of the executive.
UPDATE: We now know the whole story
