NBC Developing New ‘Coach’ Series Starring ‘Modern Family’ Star Ty Burrell
Ty Burrell is developing a new version of the hit 1990s sitcom “Coach,” with writers/executive producers Matthew Libman and Daniel Libman (“Happy Endings,” “Mr. Throwback”).
The reboot is considered a star vehicle for Burrell should it move to series, but that has yet to be determined. For now, Burrell is attached as executive producer; John Fox and John Davis also serve as non-writing executive producers.
Here’s the logline from the new “Coach”: “A legendary coach returns home to Minnesota to rebuild his alma mater’s basketball program and reconnect with his community. » Universal Television, a division of Universal Studio Group, is behind the show.
The sports comedy, originally aired on ABC from 1989 to 1997, starred Craig T. Nelson as college football coach Hayden Fox at the fictional Minnesota State University. (Later, Coach Fox and his staff coached the fictional NFL expansion team, the Orlando Breakers). Jerry Van Dyke, Bill Fagerbakke and Shelley Fabares also performed.
Barry Kemp created the original “Coach” and was also behind a revival starring Nelson and Fagerbakke in 2015. That revisit received a 13-episode order by NBC, but did not move forward.
Burrell, of course, is best known for playing Phil Dunphy on “Modern Family,” where he won two Emmy Awards. His films include “Finding Dory,” “Mr. Peabody & Sherman,” “Dawn of the Dead” and “Muppets Most Wanted.” In television, he runs the production company Dessert Whale.
Deadline was first with the news.
