NC State shot Dave Doeren after Friday night’s 31-28 loss to Stanfordthe school announced Saturday afternoon. Doeren had served as NC Statesince 2013. He was the fourth-longest-tenured coach in the FBS, before his firing on Saturday.

NC State special teams coordinator Todd Goebbel has been named interim head coach for the remainder of the season, On3’s Pete Nakos reported. Goebbel has been with the program, in some capacity, since 2019.
During his tenure in Raleigh, Doeren led the Wolfpack to a 98-73 (52-57) record and 10 bowl game appearances (4-6 record). Doeren’s firing comes after disappointing loss to Stanford
Doeren’s 14th season at the helm NC State opened with a complete slam, as his team was beaten 34-8 on the road at Virginia. Things would get even worse for the program in the coming weeks, as it attempted to run out the clock to secure a road victory. Vanderbilt but fumbled in the end zone, giving the Commodores an improbable victory.
It looked like Doeren may have turned the team around after their 31-28 win. Louisville on October 3, but that would not be the case. Friday night’s defeat against Stanford scored the Wolfpack’s second straight, bringing them to 3-4 on the season.
“It starts with me. The guys didn’t play well enough, which means I didn’t have them ready,” Doeren said after Friday night’s loss. “But it wasn’t enough. Not even close.” NC State fell behind 14-0 early in the loss and was unable to hold the lead at any point in the game.
NC State is now 3-4 this season heading into its final stretch of the season, which includes games against Cal, Duke, Syracuse, State of FloridaAnd North Carolina. The Wolfpack has not finished with fewer than six wins, and subsequently missed a bowl game, since 2019.
