
Nearly 100,000 Alabama Power accounts affected by Southern Company data breach
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WBRC) – Southern Company, the parent company of Alabama Power, confirms that an “unauthorized third party” gained access to certain utility account information for 400,000 customers, including Alabama Power customers.
Southern Company said the breach affected about 100,000 of Alabama Power’s 1.6 million accounts.

THE the company said the hackers gained access to the information including names, addresses, phone numbers, email addresses, last four digits of Social Security numbers, and other basic account details. No bank account numbers, credit card numbers, or driver’s license numbers were included.
Southern Company said it took immediate action to resolve the issue and contacted law enforcement.
The company is offering one year of free credit monitoring through Equifax to those affected.
