Netflix Is Back In Business With The Coen Brothers With Global Acquisition Of The Sinister Gothic Crime Film Jack of Spadeswhich will hit theaters in fall 2027 before its release on the streamer.
The multi-Oscar-winning duo had previously directed the western anthology feature film The Ballad of Buster Scruggs on the streamer in 2018; the picture landed three Oscar nominations.
Joel Coen directs Jack of Spades from a screenplay he wrote with Ethan Coen, Eleanor Catton and Conor McPherson. The project represents their first behind-the-scenes team-up in some time after separately directing their own films: Joel with Apple. The tragedy of Macbeth with Denzel Washington and Frances McDormand, and Ethan with the police comedies Dolls to go And Honey, don’t do it!
Jack of spades, which is billed as a picture of intrigue and betrayal set in the Scottish Highlands, stars Patsy Ferran (Living, darkest hour, God’s own country), Josh O’Connor (Challengers, Wake Up Dead Man, God’s Own Country), Damien Lewis (Homeland, Once Upon a Time in Hollywood) and Lesley Manville (Phantom Thread, The Crown, another year). The project is based on the 1901 novel by Frances Frederica Montrésor The Alien: a story from the Middle Ages.
Here Joel Coen reunites with Oscar-nominated cinematographer Bruno Delbonnel (Inside Llewyn Davis) and longtime composer Carter Burwell, with whom the brothers have worked since their first feature film in 1984. Simple blood.
Producers are Robert Graf, McDormand and Joel Coen, Steven Rales for Indian Paintbrush, Graham Broadbent and Pete Czernin for Blueprint Pictures. Donald MacKinnon is an EP.
Joel Coen is a four-time Academy Award winner, including three (best picture, adapted screenplay and direction) for No country for old people and original screenplay for Fargo. He reunites with his wife McDormand after The tragedy of Macbeth. Rales won the Academy Award for Best Live-Action Short Film for his production The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar. Netflix also finds O’Connor after that of Rian Johnson Wake up dead man in 2025 and his Emmy-winning turn as Prince Charles in The Crown.
The Coens are repped by UTA and attorney Pat Murphy. UTA represented the sale.
