New Bears Stadium in Illinois Could Become Public Property
The Bears claim to be focused on building a new stadium in Indiana. And yet they still talk to Illinois.
Via Danny Ecker of Crain’s Chicago Businesspossible construction in Arlington Heights could involve a public place.
According to the report, recent discussions between the Bears and Illinois officials have focused on a public model. Thursday’s meeting between Commissioner Roger Goodell, Bears minority owner Pat Ryan, Illinois Gov. JB Pritzker and state legislative leaders renewed hope that the Bears won’t cross the border for their next home.
Ecker also points out that Bears President and CEO Kevin Warren and principal owner George McCaskey were “notably absent” from Thursday’s meeting.
Public ownership would resolve the property tax issue that has blocked the team’s ability to convert the Bears-owned Arlington Park site into a new stadium.
The goal is to develop legislation that would pass both houses of the Illinois Legislature.
The Bears initially intended to privately own and finance the new stadium. This strategy has not gained sufficient traction. The leverage from the Indiana option prompted the powers that be in Illinois to explore a different strategy that would prevent the team from leaving the state.
The best outcome, in our opinion, would be a new stadium in Chicago. If that’s not feasible, it’s far better for the Bears to stay in Illinois than move to another state.
Yet Indiana’s option always seemed aimed at attracting Illinois’ attention. It apparently worked. The next question is whether they can reach a deal to build a new stadium in Illinois.
Until then, the Bears will continue to play at Soldier Field. Enjoy the outdoor experience while it lasts.
